INFORM Consumers Act

Last updated 4/11/25

Written by Anthony Longo

The INFORM Consumers Act is a federal law designed to help prevent the sale of stolen, counterfeit, or dangerous goods online by increasing transparency and accountability among high-volume sellers.

At Firesale, we fully support this effort and are committed to protecting our buyers and sellers through enhanced verification and security processes.

🧾 What is the INFORM Consumers Act?

Effective June 27, 2023, the INFORM Consumers Act requires online marketplaces like Firesale to collect, verify, and disclose certain information about high-volume third-party sellers — individuals or businesses that sell large volumes of goods through our platform.

🔍 Who is considered a high-volume seller?

Under the law, a high-volume seller is someone who:

  • Has made 200 or more sales of new or used consumer products

  • Has earned $5,000 or more in gross revenue over any continuous 12-month period on Firesale

If you meet these thresholds, Firesale is required to collect and verify specific identifying information from you.

🧠 What information does Firesale collect?

If you're a high-volume seller, you’ll be asked to provide:

  • Your full legal name or business name

  • A current residential or business address

  • A valid government-issued ID

  • A working phone number

  • Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN), if applicable

  • A bank account for receiving payments

We use this information strictly to comply with federal law and to help keep Firesale a safe and trusted platform.

🔒 Is my information shared publicly?

In most cases, no. However, if you're a high-volume seller, we are required to disclose certain contact information to buyers — such as your name and a method of communication — unless you qualify for a privacy exemption (such as operating out of a residential address).

We take privacy seriously and only share what’s legally required, and we do not sell or misuse your information.

How Firesale stays compliant

  • We notify and verify high-volume sellers through secure in-app messages or email

  • Sellers must respond and verify their information within 10 business days

  • Firesale may suspend accounts that fail to provide or update required information

  • We protect all collected data under our Privacy Policy
